Alaska Cannery Jobs

Alaska Fish Processing Jobs – For many years, young people have flocked to the coastal towns and villages of Alaska in search of a job in the fish processing industry. Many of these people who arrive in the summers will be seeking work in the commercial salmon fishing industries or in the seafood processing at one of the local canneries. Because of the massive salmon harvests in the Bristol Bay region each summer, these jobs are highly sought after by college students nation wide.

Each summer, commercial fishermen catch between 30 and 50 million fish in Bristol Bay within a few months period. Although the Sockeye salmon runs are the most noted, large catches of king, silver, pink and chum salmon also cross the docks each year. Bristol Bay is the richest salmon waters in the world and it is being threatened by the proposal of developing an open pit mine the size that has never been seen before in the United States.

Note: Bristol Bay produces annually one third of the world's sockeye salmon harvest. These wild salmon are rich in cancer fighting Omega-3 acids making them an extremely important food source for our nation.
